Thickeners are a diverse and multifunctional material. Currently, a series of products have been developed, including cellulose thickeners, polyacrylate thickeners, alkali-soluble acrylic thickeners, and polyurethane thickeners. These thickeners exhibit outstanding performance in terms of paste-forming properties, penetration, mesh permeability, rheology, thixotropy, fiber-drawing properties, water-holding capacity, and suspension properties, and have wide applications. Recent development focuses on liquid-associative solvent-free thickeners. Additionally, copolymerization modification of polyacrylic acid thickeners with certain substances and compounding with other thickeners are also important research areas. With the continuous development of thickeners, manufacturers generally recognize the importance of applied research. However, compared with multinational corporations, domestic companies still lag behind in product series and performance. Some product development is still in the imitation stage. Future efforts should focus on developing specialized products, solving difficulties in emulsion polymerization reactions and related technologies, improving their low-damage, shear resistance, and high-temperature resistance properties, exploring potential applications, reducing costs, and promoting the development of thickeners.
